Epistemic virtue in higher education: testing the mechanisms of intellectual character development

Abstract Epistemic virtues are character traits conducive to principled ways of thinking, leading a life flourishing. Recent years have witnessed an emergence theoretical accounts describing how they develop. However, few if any studies conducted rigorous empirical investigation into the mechanisms intellectual virtue development. In this study, we review several significant frameworks before utilizing randomized, pretest/posttest control trial design understand impacts novel thinking disposition intervention on growth. We ascertain direct and indirect effects four key virtues: curiosity, humility, integrity, tenacity. Additionally, test mediators learning. Clear evidence favoring theory-inspired mediator is observed, though observe weaker signals effects, with nuances across virtues. For instance, tenacity curiosity variables appear respond more than do humility integrity. Findings discussed in light contemporary perspectives.
